OBH goes to Washington, DC!

In May 2019, Legacy Co-Founder Derek Daley joined with OBH Center Research Scientists and Outdoor Behavioral Healthcare representatives for a trip to DC. In Partnership with the Normandy Group and Texas State University they arranged to speak with SAMHSA, NCCIH, ACF, & ADAA.

Steve DeMille, Christine Norton, Derek Daley, Mike Gass

Dr. Mike Gass, Dr. Steven DeMille of Redcliff Ascent and Derek Daley of Legacy Outdoors accompanied Dr.Norton to present on the efficacy of Outdoor Behavioral Healthcare and explore possible federal funding for OBH research.

Together, this dynamic team shared current research, best practices, risk management and cost effectiveness data with key stakeholders in mainstream mental health and government officials.

Met with staffers from Texas Senator John Cornyn's office, Texas Rep. Lloyd Doggett's office, Utah Rep. Chris Smith's office and New Jersey Rep. Chris Stewart's office to advocate for OBH practice and research and also to encourage support for SB 1263/HB 2435 Accelerating Veterans Recovery Outdoors Act, which would open up federal lands and remove barriers to access for outdoor recreation for veterans. The team highlighted the amazing research that OBH/TAPG researchers like Dr. Joanna Bettmann Schaefer and Dr. David Emmanuel Scheinfeld have done in this area, along with the amazing work that Aaron Leonard is doing with the Sierra Club Military Outdoors program. For more information on this legislation, go to: https://chrissmith.house.gov/news/documentsingle.aspx?DocumentID=405839 — in Washington, District of Columbia.

The team also met with Susan Gurley, Executive Director and Dr. Beth Salcedo, MD, Board President of the Anxiety and Depression Association of America to discuss OBH's effectiveness in treating anxiety and depression. They invited OBH to present at their annual conference, and are creating an infographic for OBH consumers about how to select an appropriate OBH program. #buildabiggerboat#RXoffthecouch

Lastly the team met with senate representatives and had lunch at the Dirksen Senate Office Building with Phil Powell of the Normandy Group.

Legacy looks forward to future collaborations with these amazing professionals. There is no question great things will come from our collaborative efforts.
