Substance Abuse and Addictive Behavior
Dedicated to change
Substance
Abuse Treatment
For many of our clients, substance
abuse and addictive behavior, beyond
blocking their journeys to responsible adulthood, has completely taken
over
their lives. Other
clients who don’t
have serious substance abuse issues may struggle with some type of
addiction or
addictive behavior that is impeding their progress. These addictive
behaviors
may involve such things as video games, internet, sex, pornography,
gambling,
or even food. Legacy’s
trained and experienced
professionals work with each client and family to understand the level
of the
addiction, to identify the addictive behaviors and thought patterns, to
develop
a plan to address these issues, and to commit to a path of healthy
recovery. Through
proven methods of treatment, including
the 12 steps, Motivational Interviewing and Dialectical Behavioral
Therapy,
clients learn the skills and gain the confidence and desire to embrace
recovery.
Substance
Abuse Assessment
Each client’s experience at Legacy
begins with a comprehensive
substance abuse and addictive behavior assessment. This
process is designed to determine the
level of substance abuse and addictive behavior and how it is
limiting the client’s
progress. The
substance abuse assessment
includes standard assessment tools like the Substance
Abuse Subtle Screening Inventory (SASSI),
Inventory of Drug Use Consequences (InDUC), and Outcomes Questionnaire
(OQ), interviews with the client and
his family, and the observations of the treatment team. The
substance abuse/addiction assessment provides a clear picture
of the nature and severity of the problem and allows the client,
treatment team
and family to plan and begin the work of recovery.
Treatment
Approach
Legacy utilizes a 12 step approach,
combined with proven
methods of treatment like Motivational Interviewing, Dialectical
Behavioral
Therapy and Stages of Change, to help clients better understand their
addictions and gain the tools and desire to overcome them. (The U.S. Department of
Health and Human
Services maintains a list of evidence-based programs and practices on
its
website www.samhsa.gov. Motivational
Interviewing and The
12
Steps
are evidence-based practices).
Licensed Substance Abuse Counselors
In addition to a licensed therapist,
each client works with
a licensed substance abuse counselor (LSAC).
The primary therapist, who functions as the treatment team
leader, works
in concert with the LSAC to develop the treatment plan that guides the
therapeutic experience of each client. Substance
abuse and addictive behavior issues are treated
in tandem with any accompanying mental or behavioral health issues.
Recovery
Staff Team
Each client’s recovery process is
supported by an
experienced team of direct-care staff. All
of the Legacy team member have a high
level of experience in substance abuse treatment, and many are in
personal
recovery themselves and modeling healthy recovery lifestyles.
Recovery
Planning
Legacy helps each client develop a
comprehensive relapse
prevention plan based on the model developed by Terrence Gorski. Legacy team members are
trained in the Gorski
model, and utilize it in guiding clients to develop their own relapse
prevention plan. Each
client’s relapse
prevention plan becomes an integral part of his Life Success Plan and
is a
crucial part of the overall aftercare planning process.
