Family Involvement
Dedicated to change
Family and family engagement in treatment has been found to be one of the most effective ways to help teens and young adults overcome behavioral issues and substance abuse. At Legacy we involve parents through writing letters, posting pictures so you can follow your child’s adventures, weekly phone calls with therapist, and face to face meetings mid-way through treatment to do family work and family adventures.
"Words
cannot express my gratitude for ALL of you. What an incredible group of
people and an incredible experience for my son and my wife and I. Thank
You, Thank You, Thank You..... and God Bless."
Steven - A parent from Texas
As a program we have clients learn about a model of change that is taught in a series of books, Leadership and Self Deception and The Anatomy of Peace. We want for parents to be able to share in their son’s therapy process. We ask that parents read the book The Anatomy of Peace. Parents also write therapy specific letters, use other educational-therapy tools assigned by therapist, and participate in other therapy activities.
For best results in treatment and aftercare planning we ask that every family work with a home therapist and an educational consultant. A team approach is most effective. Doing individual and family therapy while you child is in treatment sends a strong message. It also allows us to access local resources to aid you. Working with an educational consultant or other professional adds depth to assessment and is the most accurate way to plan for what will come after Legacy.
Family
is a part of the treatment
team
Family
involvement is correlated
with lasting outcomes in young adult treatment. Family
members
work with us from the start to help us identify goals for
treatment.
Families write impact letters and letters of commitment to help with
client
engagement with the program. We require that family members
write weekly
and correspond with their family member about goals and
objectives. We
ask family members to be in their own therapy, to hire an educational
consultant or other professionals, to work on the
team. We ask
family members to read books that teach our philosophy and allow for
parallel
education to occur with clients and their family.
We share data during weekly during phone calls and on our family portal. On the family portal you can find pictures from the week and from adventures, we post staff comments about client’s goals and progress. Guides share about the weekly adventures. We post data collected from the OQ-45 as well as other information. We share this so that family members can get a weekly snap shot of how treatment is progressing, so they can pace their own treatment, and to have better data as they shape decisions about their client’s next step.
